Zach Hurst

Expert Craftsman, Owner Southern Made Construction

The scent of freshly cut wood and the rhythmic clang of a hammer have been the score of my life as long as I can remember.

Both my father and grandfather built careers in the woodworking, blacksmithing, and building industries. My childhood memories are filled with tagging along to the sawmill and working with my father and grandfather. The work was hard and the days were long, but man, I loved it.

From building homes to furniture to children’s toys, over the years I watched my father and grandfather work hard and craft things they were really proud of. Those things were built to last, and they brought my family so much joy over many years. As a result, I really fell in love with the whole process.

I never felt pressured to follow in their footsteps, but it became a natural step to take a job in construction and building materials when I was 17. While that particular path wasn’t for me, I found myself drawn back to woodworking.

My grandfather had a full wood shop in his basement and I would spend hours there, making all kinds of stuff that I would then share with friends. To see something I made with my own hands bring someone else so much happiness and gratitude really rekindled what craftsmanship is all about for me.

Transitioning from a hobbyist to a small business owner has filled me with an indescribable sense of wonder and pride. Each project my clients entrust me with affirms for me the true magic of woodworking — the ability to transform raw materials into cherished treasures that spark joy in others.
